South Carolina's Heritage Corridor was designed to bring about economic development through tourism by using natural, cultural and historic resources. In what started as one rural community, the corridor now includes 14 counties from the mountains of Oconee County to the city of Charleston totaling 240 miles. Federal legislation designated this corridor as a National Heritage Area in 1996. With this designation and the support of private citizens, the South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, state agencies, and many others, the South Carolina Heritage Corridor continues to reveal a vibrant history of the land and its people.
